The first motorcycle manufactured in India was by Royal Enfield, an iconic Indian motorcycle brand that traces its manufacturing roots back to the 1950s in Chennai (formerly Madras). After India gained independence in 1947, the Indian government chose Royal Enfield motorcycles for army use. In 1954, an order was placed for 800 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 cc motorcycles to be assembled locally.
